Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!
What Do We Think?
First of all, we are super excited that Fano has reintroduced the MG6 model. It provides a full 25.5” scale length take on the classic Mustang, doing away with the intonation and low string tension issues that hinder the shorter scale design. The MG6 Oltre also features a “vintage” style 6-screw Gotoh 510T tremolo with steel saddles and a smooth design that keeps the strings from making contact with the baseplate when they come up through the block and over the saddle. Strings move freely back to pitch every time and tuning stays spot on!
This one has flavors that remind us of a cross between a Strat and a Jazzmaster, offering present yet bluesy neck tones and full-bodied bridge sounds. The Lollar OmniTron P-90s feature pole magnets like a standard single coil rather than the bar magnets of a traditional P-90, delivering more snap and clarity than the traditional offerings while retaining a warm low end that you can feel pushing back from the amp.
These pickups produce a big, open clean tone that translates just as well with an overdrive. They’ll take you immediately to thick and creamy with some sizzle on top when pushed. They also “clean up” nicely when playing with the volume between 6 and 10 in front of a moderately overdriven tube amp, putting a lot of control right at your fingertips. This guitar knows exactly how to deliver a balanced mix of depth and jangle.
How Does It Play?
These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. We have it set up with action nearly down to 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking.
