What Do We Think?
the sweetest instruments in the shop, no doubt. It does cleans just beautifully. The neck position TV Jones PowerTron is warm but defined, with plenty of snap coming off of the maple fretboard if you want to dig into those treble strings. The middle position has all the sparkle you would expect, beautiful single coil-like clarity and full body underneath. The bridge position PowerTron is wound hotter than the neck to bite just a little bit when you dig in, with a tight focus on the midrange and an open top
end that is articulate yet controlled.
Perhaps our favorite way
to play this guitar is to dial in the amp for some great Malcom Young crunch on the bridge pickup, and then flip to the neck pickup and play more open chord voicings with a lighter touch. The neck position will dial down the grit, flavor in some generous warmth and maintain a sweet top end. A good amp—or even amp sim—will respond extremely well to
the shift in pickup voicing and player dynamics. From 70’s-era hard rock to Elevation Worship, this guitar is ready to lay it down!
How Does It Play?
This guitar sets up incredibly low. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E. We typically don’t set guitars up this low, but this one sits very comfortably
there without any fret buzz! The round back 50’s-inspired C profile is fills out the hand nicely, with a good taper that starts moderate in the cowboy chord area and really encourages you to dig in on the upper frets. The German Carve top also improves the comfort of the picking arm coming over the body. This instrument is a superb player, from tone to fit to finish.
