Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Do We Think?
This 2020 Mario Martin is in excellent condition. If there’s any play wear, it is indistinguishable from the original relic work. The frets don’t show any wear, and the neck is smooth and flawless.
The Arcane 61 Experience pickup set is tight and punchy in the swamp ash body. Clear and even glassy with the right amp settings. The in-between positions have a nice cluck played softly, and come through bold and spanky when played more aggressively. The bridge position is wired to the rear tone control, allowing for a nice and smooth overdrive tone when you get the amp cranked.
The guitar features a Madagascar Rosewood fretboard on a roasted maple neck that pairs oh-so-well with the Dark Lake Placid Blue finish and tort pickguard. The whole guitar weighs just 6lb 10oz.
How Does It Play?
This one features Mario’s Chunky C neck profile, which we would consider to be just barely chunky. It is comparable to a ’65 C from Fender’s Custom Shop, as a point of reference. Great feeling neck any way you describe it. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th without a hint of buzz.
