The Lion STP is a single treble pickup take on the Lion that retains plenty of ability to do some heavy lifting, while ensuring maximum string resonance for that undeniable “Jr” sound. It can be ordered in either a 24.75” or 25.5” long scale. It comes with a nice tummy cut, 3-on-3 “snakehead” tuner/headstock configuration, and choice of body wood.
What Do We Think?
This is one round-sounding bridge pickup! It has the quintessential P-90 bite when pushed. A bit of sizzle over a brooding low end when you really get serious with the gain (think Tony Iommi). Just enough top end to keep things articulate. It has sweet, smooth body for your cleans and loads of warm, punchy low midrange on tap for your lighter drives.
Playing over the “neck pickup” area coaxes tones that are a mix of spongy and woody. Moving the picking hand back toward the bridge makes the midrange nice and taut, emphasizing the trebles in the process. Either way, notes really sing without the magnetic pull of a neck pickup dampening them.
While the pickup responds brilliantly (pun intended) to the tone knob, you won’t necessarily find yourself *needing* to dial it back. The tonal footprint of the pickup is thick and broad, but tapers off before the top end becomes even the least bit harsh. The clarity is there, without any undesired spike.
The Graph Tech ResoMax wraparound bridge features six individual saddles to give you full control over intonation. It’s made of a strong but lightweight aluminum alloy, giving you the resonance and immediate response of a classic wraparound with perhaps a little more beef to it. It also features a magnetic lock to the studs so you don’t have to worry about it falling off during quick string changes if you slack all strings at once.
How Does It Play?
The neck profile is inspired by a moderately chunky ‘59, measuring out at 0.89” for the 1st fret and 0.98” for the 12th. For lack of better words, it feels “classic.” Contributing to that feel is a straight 12” fretboard radius like your favorite vintage Gibsons. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E, without a hint of buzz.
