What Do We Think?

When Brian at Shabat guitars let us know our stealth bari was ready, we decided to coin the name “Stealthy Barry.”  And this guitar is all that. Satin Black finish with matching headstock, black pickguard, Ebony fretboard and aged nickel hardware. And stealthy on the shoulder too, weighing just 7lb 5.7oz! Quite a feat for a baritone 27” scale guitar.

Now from the back, the guitar is a little less stealthy. Unless you’re blending in with a tiger. The flame on the neck is superb; tight and 3D as you turn it under the light. The medium C profile has supportive shoulders and a healthy feel in the hand.

We chose Lollar El Rayo pickups for this build to bring out a crystal clear midrange that never gets muddy even on open position chords. The pickups have much of the clarity of a single coil, but with an extended bottom and rounder attack. Let’s just say that dark and brooding Barry is actually quite sweet on the inside. He goes low in style.

You also have a coil split activated via a push/pull pot on the tone knob. This gives you even tighter, spankier tones that still capture the full depth of the baritone tuning. From haunting, pristine cleans in neck and middle to a touch of twang at the bridge, the coil split peels back a whole other layer of big uncle Barry.

How Does It Play?

We haven’t played a Shabat yet that didn’t feel good. And even as a baritone, this one plays smooth and easy. The string action splits the difference between 4/64” and 5/64” on the low B string at the 12^th fret, and sits right at 4/64” on the high B. There is not even a hint of fretbuzz. The frets are polished to perfection and the fret ends rounded just right.
