What Does Ivey Think?

This Lion Special is a really cool take on a classic "T" style design, including an HS pickup set, coil tap, and hardtail bridge. No doubt providing some of the classic tele sounds you're accustomed to while allowing access to a range of others. Although there are plenty of guitars of this body shape out there, there are not many that can compare to the build quality of a Shabat guitar in feel and craftsmanship.

The bridge sound is massive, great note clarity and a well-sculpted midrange that offers just the right amount of bite in the upper mids. The Lollar Imperial is a pretty dynamic humbucker, and if you like to ride the volume knob on your guitar it will clean up very nicely without losing too much top end. This pickup also splits very well, allowing you to get somewhere between a strat and tele bridge sound that's still full and lively. 

If you're looking for a creamy neck tone with plenty of punch, this guitar has it. The Special T has warmth but is not by any means dull, pairing very well with the 1-piece Premium Flame roasted Maple neck. When used with the bridge pickup coil split, this guitar offers a scooped and snappy middle position tone that's a lot of fun to play. 

How Does It Play?

The string action is fast and low, only a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E. The neck is a familiar Medium C, a little “healthier” than Fender’s Modern C for frame of reference. Nobody rounds their fret ends nicer than Avi Shabat, and the frets are dressed beautifully all around.
