What Do We Think?
The harmonics sound like they are jumping off this guitar before you even plug it in. Just give it a strum. You have the fantastic Descendant Vibrato coupled to a resonant piece of swamp ash and a roasted maple neck topped with wenge fingerboard. From fit to finish, everything is top notch.
The Lollar Regal in the neck position is warm but tight. The low strings have definition and the high strings have quite a shimmer, sandwiching a bluesy midrange. Strumming comes across as warm and enunciated. Single note lines are sweet and chirpy.
The middle position sports a fabulously quick compression and incredible sparkle. It works just as well for snappy funk rhythm parts as it does for slower, open arpeggiated work. We often consider the middle position to be the most “acoustic” of the three positions on a Korona, the one where you hear the immediacy of your pick attach translated beautifully through your amp.
The bridge position adds some bark to the recipe. The top end tapers off nicely so as not to require any EQ changes from your amp or from the tone knob on the guitar, yet it remains spanky at the same time. It’s a very dynamic position that can push your amp with a heavy-handed attack, or clean up and take on a sweeter air under a lighter hand. With overdrive this position sounds both smooth and articulate.
And we need to give a specific nod to the Descendant Vibrato. It gives you an improved break angle at the bridge which significantly improves the resonance of the instrument and reduces the unwanted string noise that typically occurs behind the bridge with a JM-style vibrato. It has a very smooth action and returns to zero incredibly well. Both the tension of the vibrato itself and the tension of the arm in the socket can be adjusted to get the feel just where you want it.
How Does It Play?
The Kauer Korona features a healthy medium C profile with an eye toward the classics. The shoulders are nice and round, very supportive of the hand. The string action at the 12th fret measures just 4/64” on the low E string and even lower on the high E string, without any fretbuzz. The Plek work Doug does on his guitars is tough to beat!
