Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Cam Think?
Mario continues to impress me with all his builds. As I’ve been getting to know his models, specs, neck shapes, etc, there is a consistent thread of quality and attention to detail throughout. They feel like true vintage instruments. That said, I’m really digging this black T-style! This one features a super resonant featherweight Paulownia body. When strummed acoustically, it is quite loud, surprisingly so in fact! The roasted flame maple neck is drop dead gorgeous, and the Chunky C+ profile feels very comfortable. More on the neck profile later, let’s talk tone!
This T features a set of Lollar Alnico 3 pickups with a 4-Way switch. The positions are neck and bridge in series, neck only, neck and bridge in parallel, and bridge only. This might be the first guitar I’ve ever played with a 4-Way switch! It is a special feature of the Lollar Alnico 3 neck pickup to include the bridge in series, combining both into a humbucker! It’s a great bonus tonal option, especially since you are getting hum cancelling to boot!
The A3’s are traditional sounding T-style pickups. They are lower output than some of the other Lollar offerings, but super clear and pure. The neck position is even across the frequency spectrum with a tight bass response and punchy midrange. The bridge pickup is very bright and clear, but not harsh. The note decay is a bit quicker, but this works well for quick ‘chicken pickin’ lines. It’s very much the quintessential bridge T tone.
The neck and bridge pickups in series is a very cool tone. Higher in output than the other positions and super punchy in the mids. And if you roll off the tone a bit, you can get a nice faux neck humbucker sound. Finally, the neck and bridge in parallel is a very classic middle position T tone that’s funky and scooped. If the traditional T-style is your thing, this is the perfect set!
How Does It Play?
This one sets up at just over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and right at 3/64” on the high E string at the 12th fret. The Chunky C+ neck profile measures around .880” at the 1st fret and .950” at the 12th fret. While we are in the territory of a thicker neck profile, Mario still makes it very playable and comfortable. I really like this neck profile a lot. In fact, it might be my favorite of his! And as I mentioned before, the flame maple is silky smooth, as are the frets. This one is an exceptionally playable instrument.
