The Xotic XSC Series is for the player who wants a more vintage take on the classic S-Style guitar, but with some modern improvements. Features include an HSS pickup configuration with a choice between hand-wound Raw Vintage RV-50 or RV-60 Pickups in the neck and middle, an RV-PAF in the bridge, vintage locking tuners, Jescar frets, and an aged lacquer finish. Lots of color options available!

What Does Cam Think?

We are admittedly huge Xotic fans at Guitars to Be Played, and this XSC-2 is a favorite among favorites! First off, the aged ‘Ice Blue Metallic Over Burst’ finish is a sight to behold. As someone who has first-hand experience finishing guitars, this is a very time-consuming paint job. And to top it off, the wear is natural looking, which is a difficult look to achieve. Overall, it’s a stunning guitar, but I’m here to tell you, it sounds as good as it looks!

This XSC-2 is sporting a pair of RV-60 singles in the neck and middle and an RV-PAF in the bridge. The choice of the RV-60’s over the RV-50’s is a great decision, as the brighter pickups pair well with the bridge humbucker. The RV-60 in the neck is glassy and clear, but with some meat on the bone. The middle position RV-60 surprised me with just how lively it is. I generally don’t utilize the middle position on a ‘S’-style guitar by itself, but I would in this guitar. It’s bright and with a cutting midrange. This also makes positions 2 and 4 that much more quacky. I should add, the middle/ bridge pickup combination utilizes the entire humbucker, which is a very cool tone.
Speaking of humbuckers, the RV-PAF is also quite lively and bright, but with a pronounced midrange and tight low end. This tonality works exceptionally well with some overdrive, which this guitar ate up… and asked for seconds! You’d be hard pressed to find a better humbucker for rock or classic metal. I was quite impressed.  

How Does It Play?

The neck is a modern C profile, measuring about 0.84” at the first fret and 0.92” at the 12th. The fret ends are beautifully rounded with a mirror finish. The string action sits at 4/64” across all strings, measured at the 12^th fret. The Jescar 55090 frets are an excellent size for chords or single notes. Bending is easy and the frets don’t feel like train tracks under your fingers!
