From 3rd Power:
“The SPANKY Jr 6VEL is our new high-headroom grab-n-go 5 Watt 110 combo amplifier! Thanks to 3P’s 6VEL™ technology, you can operate the amp on most of your favorite tube combinations. The SPANKY Jr 6VEL is for virtually everyone and is at home just about anywhere. It’s designed on an overbuilt power supply including the exact higher current power transformer as used in our 20W Spanky MKII+ so you know it’s got enough headroom and punch for any low volume gig, rehearsal, showcase, or any environment where inspiration calls. We’ve also incorporated the Spanky MKII+’s switchable boost mode to take it to the edge of breakup or all the way over the top!”
What Do We Think?
Far from being a “small” amp in tone, the Spanky Jr. sounds phenomenal both to the naked ears and to a mic. We feel the real magic lies in the mid knob, a feature that propels it well past similarly-sized combos from your mainstay brands. The amp also has plenty of natural warmth. Switch between the vibrant dynamics of input 1 and the mellow touch of input 2 as needed.
Rolling the mid knob below noon delivers clean and “open” tones, perfect for Blackface-on-the-go at low volumes. Returning the mid knob to “flat” conjures a Bassman-like neutrality. A Tele sounds tight in the bass, refined through the mids and smooth in the highs. Plugged into input 1, breakup starts around 11 to noon. Humbuckers will drive the amp earlier on the volume knob exactly as expected, and sound wonderfully thick and creamy while doing so.
Pushing the mid control to 3 o’clock brings you into Tweed territory and saturates the amp more quickly regardless of pickup type. Rather than pinpointing an exact frequency, the mid control really feels like a texture waiting to be “seasoned to taste”. Get creative in its interaction with the other tone controls. Boosting both the treble and mids while rolling back the bass even gives you some AC15-inspired tones on the upper reaches of the fretboard.
If you’re looking to dish out a bit of extra dirt, the Boost mode has you covered. This can get you from gritty to roaring with just a roll of the volume knob on the guitar. The boost gets its extra gain by nearly bypassing the tone stack, yet hard pans of the tone knobs will reveal a little EQ left on tap should you need it!
The tube driven reverb is lush with a beautiful bloom and temperate decay. Think a cross between “hall” and “spring” if you were choosing presets on a DAW plugin. It is the perfect tonal gatekeeper at the end of your signal chain.
And we mentioned mic’ing earlier… this is an incredible amp for venues that constantly knock you for your stage volume. While you shouldn’t expect to keep up with a drummer without reinforcement, nothing about this amp sounds small. Neither does it require heavy EQ’ing at the board. In fact, it sounds fantastic through in-ears with no work at all. We have put the Spanky Jr. through its paces in real-life environments and heartily approve.
