What Does Josh Think?

This amp is all about balance. And you choose where that balance lies for you. Whether you want a “big amp” feel with a compressed power section or a more gentle ride reminiscent of a broken-in combo, this amp delivers. It dishes out everything from crystal cleans to raging overdrives, and covers all the beautiful nuances in between.

There are perhaps too many “sweet spots” to list them all. But I can offer a few highlights. Without peeling paint off the walls, I like to start with the input Volume and the Level knobs right around noon. Starting there with humbuckers allows you to tweak the Level one way or the other to change the feel of the power section, and tweak the Volume to push you into… or pull you out of… that lush edge-of-breakup territory.

Playing single coils? Sure, you can bump up some knobs to compensate. Or you can use the footswitchable boost to bring your single coils to life and balance them to your buckers. You also get a nice bump in the midrange without losing the chime. You’ll push the clean channel more quickly into beautiful breakup, and the boost is also there for the overdrive channel when you want to give it an extra push.

The amp has a lot of switches, but they are very friendly in actual use. Flipping the Mid and Rock switches to the up position gives the amp an incredibly full bottom and a richly-colored midrange that responds beautifully to pinch harmonics. Mid switch down gives you sparkly Blackface tones. Go even further by flipping up the Bright switch… the smiley face you see when you look at the three switches corresponds to the chimey EQ curve you’ll hear out of the amp.

The overdrive channel (also footswitchable) can go from light to seriously saturated. In my opinion, it is particularly rich and creamy between 9 and noon. It also cleans up really nicely with the guitar’s volume. While I can’t speak for all guitars, I can say the ones I’ve tried kept a really nice handle on the top end even as the guitar’s volume was pulled back. The amp has such a good focused, punchy midrange that doesn’t muddy easily.

And then there’s a secret weapon… the FET input. This input introduces a transistor gain stage before the rest of the circuitry, making the guitar hit your preamp sections harder. The result is a seductive sizzle on a Les Paul and a glassy punch on a Strat. Again, the guitar’s volume knob has extraordinary control over the amp. You can hold back the tide or let it roar full tilt with just a quick turn of the hand.

The reverb is lush and incredibly versatile. I tend to favor the reverb controls (both the Send and Return) between 9 and 10 o’clock for “everyday” playing. However, turning up the Send will deliver the big surfy spring reverb of a Fender combo, while turning up the Return provides a nice cavern reverb effect. Bringing up both controls gives you some truly huge washes and ambient textures. Pushing them to 3 o’clock will even drive the reverb preamp tubes into sounding like a big pipe organ radiating through the doors of a cathedral!

Getting down to the nitty gritty, let’s address those ratio knobs on the back panel. They ensure a harmonious balance in volume between your cleans and dirts. With the front panel settings described above, I like to go for noon on the clean ratio knob and 9 to 11 o’clock on the overdrive ratio. But they also function as master volumes for each channel, further allowing you to turn the amp into a full-blown monster that brings down the house, or instead bring down the volumes for bedroom-friendly practice sessions.

This Phoenix Fury 50W head features Bronze Croc covering and classic “Fender’ black grill. We have it paired with a matching Amplified Nation 1x12 oversized cab loaded with a Celestion G12-65. This makes for an incredibly balanced cab that allows the amp to shine top to bottom. Both head and cab are included in the listing. Contact us for a price on the head only.
