The heart and soul of the new Black Cat is the immediate feeling of connection you get with it. It’s always lively and toneful, never feeling choked or constrained. Driven by a 20W power amp featuring a cathode bias pair of EL84s, it’s remarkably loud with enough headroom to play with a live drummer yet has an effective master volume control allowing for playing at home with no loss of tone.  

A full complement of speaker outs means the amp can handle any cabinet combination and we’ve included a line out as-well, so you can connect it to an IR loader or a Wet/Dry rig.

What Do We Think?

One of the things that really stands out to us is the way the two channels are voiced. Channel 1 is remarkably lively and chimey, absolutely perfect for your cleans. Channel 2 is notably thicker and throatier, giving wonderful meat and body to your overdrives. Independent master volumes for each channel make it effortless to balance the levels of your clean and dirt tones.

The 2-band EQ and Cut knob are highly interactive. Dialing back the treble not only rolls back high frequencies, but also boosts a midrange that rises richly in the mix. Bumping the treble pulls the opposite direction on the midrange to form a brisk scoop in the EQ. And the Cut knob provides powerful control over the taper of your top end. You can conjure everything from warm and rounded with the Cut knob turned towards the right, to a Vox-like sheen when rolled in the opposite direction.

The Black Cat ships with a 2-button footswitch for channel switching and for engaging its deep, well-versed tremolo. The effect can go from subtle to staccato at either end of the Intensity spectrum. The reverb is lush, with a decay that hangs ethereally at the upper reaches of the knob and yet still avoids being overpowering. A padded slip cover is also included with the amp.
