What Does Cam Think?

In my relatively short tenure at Guitars to Be Played, I’ve had the pleasure of gazing upon and playing many stunning instruments. That said, when I come across an instrument that stands out just based upon looks alone, that’s saying something! This CP Thornton Thinline Classic II is that instrument! The flame is practically everywhere, visible on the neck, headstock, and body.

This Thinline Classic II is composed of a premium selection of woods, namely a European fiddleback olive ash body, a torrefied 5A flame rock maple neck, and a rosewood fretboard. Just incredible aesthetics and masterful construction, which is something CP Thornton is well known for.

But how does it sound? This beauty is packed with a pair of Ron Ellis pickups, and do they pack a punch! The neck position is the Midtall, also known as the Signature TN. It’s a bright neck pickup that’s a favorite of Ron Ellis himself. It features extended upper-mids and highs, and yet it remains articulate in any gain setting. Into a clean amp, it’s clear and punchy with a tight low end. It’s great for chords, single notes, and anything else you want to throw at it!

The 52T in the bridge is the quintessential ‘blackguard’ sound. It’s bright and mid-forward, but also well balanced with woody articulation. It’s just what you want paired with a bright and articulate neck pickup. Notes have bark, definition, and body.

Both pickups pair very well in the middle position. Their combination yields a hollow, scooped tone. Maybe a little brighter than a typical ‘T’-Style middle position, but in a pleasant way. All that said, the rosewood fretboard seems to temper any extraneous brightness that would put this instrument into the harsh territory. Same with the thinline body, adding some bloom, softening the attack just a hair.

Speaking of the middle position, we need to talk about the blend knob! When the 3-way selector is in either the neck or bridge position, you can gradually bring in as much of the other pickup as you want by turning up the blend knob. Once you are at about 50% on the blend knob, you are operating with ‘both pickups in parallel’, effectively the middle position on the toggle switch. It’s incredible the number of tones you can conjure up with this setup!

How Does It Play?

The guitar sets exceptionally well, with string action right at 4/64” across all strings measured at the 12th fret. The neck profile is Thornton’s Medium C, which is very comfortable. It does fill out up the neck, but only very gradually so, and it’s honestly not that much fatter. The medium size frets are beautifully leveled with no dead spots or buzz, and the matte finish on the neck is velvety smooth. The flame on this beauty is incredible!
