What Does Josh Think?

This is much more than your average Thinline! First of all, it's more hollow and the acoustic response of the guitar is much more vibrant. The body only is only blocked under the pickups and the bridge. There is an open area between the pickups, and open space behind the bridge. The resulting tone (and weight) leans a bit on the airier side, with sweet mids and plenty of snap.

It is worth noting here that CP Thornton is able to build an arm contour into the thinline body because he starts with a full piece of wood for the top, routes out all the cavity area, and then applies a slab back. Most manufacturers do it the other way around... full piece for the back, routed out, and then a flat slab on the front. Which means the other manufacturers can't give you an arm contour on a thinline.

The Ron Ellis Ellisonic pickups are particularly sweet and clear. The neck position has a full, rich bottom and a sparkly top end. Snappier than a traditional P-90. Bold and punchy when you dig in, but well-heeled when laying back. The bridge pickup is Tele-esque, yet more spanky than brash. The midrange remains very controlled.

The middle position brings in a touch of quack, but not exactly the phasey sounds of a Strat in-between position. As I find to often be the case, this position perfectly captures the acoustic qualities of the guitar. And in case I need to remind you... it is very resonant!

These pickups respond exceptionally to the tone knob. If you feel like pulling the guitar into the background a bit, just roll off the tone knob. The liveliness of the thinline body still comes through, but the guitar settles back into the mix with more tapered highs and a mellowed attack. This translates equally across all pickup positions, so you won't find yourself needing to roll the tone up and down as you change positions.

Lastly, the guitar features a blend knob. When in neck position, it blends in the bridge pickup. When in bridge position, it blends in the neck pickup. Blend all the way up and you essentially have the middle position. But blend in moderation, and you have subtle mixes of the pickups that remind me of the qualities of a classic FilterTron in their delivery.

How Does It Play?

The Medium C neck shape fits nicely in my hand. The neck is almost early '60s oval C but not quite as flattened on the back. But the shoulders feel eerily similar. The fretwork is beautiful and the overall attention to detail is unmatched! The string action hovers right at 4/64" measured at the 12th fret.
