What Does Cam Think?

It’s always exciting to welcome in a new builder to our shop. We had heard great things about CP Thornton, so we reached and I’m so glad we did. After receiving our first two builds I can confirm, these instruments are truly exceptional.

This Thinline Classic II is finished in a stunning translucent white-blonde gloss. It’s also feather-light, coming in at under 6 lbs. While many thinline ‘T’-style guitars are a bit blocky and angular, the Classic II has a generous arm contour, keeping your forearm comfortable. It’s an elegant take on the classic thinline recipe. Woods are classic as well, being a one-piece torrefied maple neck and a swamp ash body.

Tonally, this instrument falls in-between what you’d typically find in a ‘T’-style instrument, and something non-traditional. The pickups are a pair of Ron Ellis humbucker sized Ellisonics, which are pickups I hadn’t heard before. The neck pickup is remarkable, in that it has the body and fullness of a humbucker, the midrange of a P90, and the top-end of a Tele neck pickup. As I was playing the guitar, each string-set seemed to elicit a new EQ response. This is truly a unique characteristic in a pickup.

The bridge pickup has something similar going on to where the low strings bring out a Tele style bark, but as I ascend in register, a P90-esque tonality is present in the mids and highs. I can’t say I’ve played pickups so dynamic and colorful.

The icing on the cake is the blend knob. When the 3-way selector is in either the neck or bridge position, you can gradually bring in as much of the other pickup as you want by turning up the blend knob. Once you are at about 50% on the blend knob, you are operating with ‘both pickups in parallel’, effectively the middle position on the toggle switch. It’s incredible the number of tones you can conjure up with this setup! It’s incredible the number of tones you can conjure up with this setup!

How Does it Play?

The guitar sets beautifully, with string action measuring barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string measured at the 12th fret, and right at 4/64” on the high E string. The neck profile is Thornton’s Medium C, which is very comfortable. It does fill out up the neck, but only very gradually so, and it’s honestly not that much fatter. The medium size frets are beautifully leveled with no dead spots or buzz, and the matte finish on the neck is velvety smooth.
