In 2014, the ESP USA shop opened in North Hollywood CA to craft instruments that continue ESP’s highly acclaimed tradition of excellence in guitar building. If you’re looking for a guitar that offers the ultimate combination of build quality and playability of any instrument at any price — and is 100% Made in the USA — ESP USA is the right choice.

If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build!

What Does Cam Think?

The ESP USA shop continues to impress me with every build we receive. Having personally owned many ESP USA’s, I can tell you first-hand how well-made these guitars are. Having said that, this is the first ‘full thickness’ USA Eclipse I’ve had the pleasure of playing. As a result, it’s much more comparable to the ‘LP’ style of guitar this instrument is based on than the standard thickness Eclipses I’ve played. If you’ve never played a USA Eclipse, imagine taking an ‘LP’, adding incredible attention to detail, and improving on the overall neck joint design. That’s the ESP USA Full-Thickness Eclipse in a nutshell.

I was pleased to see that this build features one of my all-time favorite pickup sets, the Seymour Duncan Saturday Night Specials. These are just killer pickups that work in so many situations. They are medium output humbuckers that fill the void between vintage and modern winds. They are touted as being the perfect pickup for ‘70s arena rock. I agree, but they do so much more.

The bridge position is voiced a little hotter and fatter than the neck position. It’s full and aggressive but not compressed like modern humbuckers can be. Your dynamics will shine through, even with a gainy amp. It’s the perfect rock pickup, pushing your amp into a beautiful harmonically rich drive. And clean, it works great too. It’s balanced and not too hyped in any one frequency.

The neck position is also optimized for rock playing by maintaining clarity and definition, even under serious gain. And clean, we were absolutely surprised at how great this guitar sounded, especially in the neck position. It has depth and dimension, never sounding wooly, and has a sweetness to the top-end. The split options are the icing on the cake, taking an already great sounding guitar and adding additional sounds to the arsenal. Same with the middle position on the 3-way, carving out the midrange and sporting a woody attack. I really love these pickups, and they are perfectly at home in this Eclipse!

How Does It Play?

The string action sits right at 4/64” across all strings measured at the 12th fret. The thin U neck feels like a very nice medium C carve to my hand. It’s supportive for chords but doesn’t hinder your ability to get around quickly. It’s an excellent neck shape that will appeal to most folks. Jescar makes the best frets, and the 57110 size is my favorite. They are jumbo, but they don’t feel too big for the guitar.
