What Does Cam Think?
I have owned and played many ESP’s in my life and the USA line has consistently been at the top of the heap. They are expertly crafted shred machines that offer unrivaled playability, performance, and tone. This USA M-II Deluxe is a great example of what ESP USA is known for: flawless craftsmanship, gorgeous aesthetics, and a legendary design. It would be hard to conceive of a better high-performance guitar!
The classic mahogany body, maple top and neck recipe is a staple of guitar building, and it works so very well in this Deluxe model. It’s the perfect jumping-off point for the pickups. The Duncan Pegasus/ Sentient set is a wonderful choice for this instrument. I had not played either pickup before playing this guitar, but I was quite impressed with both.
The Pegasus in the bridge is a medium-output humbucker, but it felt great under my fingers. It’s a very articulate pickup with tight lows and sparkly highs, as it was originally designed for extended range guitars. It sounded killer with some gain and had a nice bark when played clean.
The Sentient neck pickup is described as sitting between a Duncan ’59 and Jazz model. Like the Pegasus, it is a medium-output pickup with excellent articulation. My leads sounded fluid under high gain and my cleans were sparkly, yet full. In all positions, I could hear every note come through, even while playing dense and complex chords. Both pickups are splitable via the push-pull tone knob, which adds an additional layer of versatility.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and just over 3/64" on the high E without buzz. The neck is listed as ‘Extra Thin U’, but by no means does the neck feel thin. It has some meat on it and fits my hand beautifully. The stainless-steel frets and silky-smooth ebony board add to the effortless playability factor. The Floyd Rose Original Tremolo is one of the best locking tremolo designs of all time, and it stays in tune wonderfully. If you had to own only one high performance ‘shred’ guitar, this could, and should, be that one!
