What Does Cam Think?

There is something special about this JM6. I don’t know what it is, but when I plugged it in, it just had the thing! I wasn’t expecting anything unusual because I just got through playing another JM6. That was also a great guitar, but sometimes, certain guitars just speak to you! This one spoke to me. Features include an alder body, maple neck, rosewood board, a lightly aged Charcoal Frost finish, a Descendant tremolo bridge, and Lollar El Rayo humbucking pickups.

So this JM6 marks a couple firsts for me. I had never used a Descendant Tremolo before, and I had also never played Lollar El Rayo pickups. Both were pleasant surprises. When I initially plugged in the guitar, I assumed the pickups were Lollar Imperials. But after playing the guitar for a minute, I knew something was different.

The bridge pickup had this extra perceived attack. I immediately felt it in my playing. The notes had a bounce and air to them. I’d say they are slightly more aggressive than an Imperial. It was quite a nice surprise! The neck pickup was super chimey and alive with clarity. It felt great dig in. This thing might be my favorite sounding JM6 at the moment!

The Descendant bridge is awesome. I come from the world of locking/ floating tremolo systems, so I had my reservations. The Descendant bridge has an ultra-smooth feel. It’s a feeling I’ve only been able to experience with locking bridges. This bridge is operating on a different principal altogether, but it feels great! It’s most suited for subtle vibrato, but you can still be very emotive with the bar. I was having a lot of fun with it!

How Does It Play?

The early ‘60s-inspired C profile feels extremely comfortable in my hands. I have experience with lots of neck sizes, big and small. I’d put the profile right in the middle. The string action measures just a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E string, and right at 4/64” at the 12th fret on the high E string. The action and overall playability on this Fano is great!
