Like what you see? All photos are of the exact instrument you will receive.

The Alt de Facto series is Fano’s top-of-the-line custom series. These are handbuilt in the USA by one luthier from start to finish so that every instrument tells a unique and cohesive story. Nitrocellulose lacquer body and neck of course. If this isn’t exactly the guitar you are looking for, let us know what you want and we’ll get you the best price on your custom build.

What Does Cam Think?

The Fano JM6 model needs no introduction, especially to us at the shop. It is the most popular Fano model and rightfully so. The offset body sits comfortably in your lap and balances nicely on a strap. The vintage inspired aesthetics are classic, yet fresh at the same time. It is wonderful instrument that we all love here at Guitars to Be Played!

I am a sucker for Burgundy Mist, and I’m always a sucker for a trem! Even if you aren’t a heavy trem user, it’s nice to have a trem for the sake of a slightly less aggressive neck pitch. You end up with the strings a little closer to the body and you don’t have to raise the bridge pickup up as high to compensate. It’s a nice playability perk that I feel gets overlooked. And speaking of trems, I dig this modern 2 post style. It isn't as sensitive as a Floyd, but it still has enough play to be expressive and emotive.

As far as tone is concerned, this guy is a monster! We typically spec the JM6 out with humbuckers, P90’s, or a combination of those. This build features a pair of Lollar Firebird pickups. I initially took these for mini-humbuckers, that is until I plugged the guitar in. The pickups remind me of bigger, fatter single coils, which ain’t a bad thing!

The neck position is super bright and articulate, but still girthy enough to be full. It’s probably one of the more tonally interesting neck pickups I’ve played. It rides the line between a single coil and a mini-humbucker. If you roll back the tone, it does a convincing full size humbucker impression, leaving you with a very versatile neck pickup.

The bridge pickup is bright and spanky with a tight low end. The congestion and mid frequency build up that seems to plague some humbuckers is absent, leaving a very open and pleasing tonality. And it absolutely excels at mid gain tones, along with edge of breakup gain settings. In the middle position, the word jangly comes to mind. This is the type of tone that works great with a Vox, a Matchless, or even a Fender. Really nice for strumming chords or even single notes. The Firebird pickups were a great choice for this build, making this JM6 a unique and versatile guitar to add to your arsenal.

How Does It Play?

The JM6 model features Fano’s early ‘60s C neck shape, which measures .830” at the first fret and .920" at the twelfth fret. It‘s a great shape, especially for those not wanting a baseball bat, but still wanting a neck with a little girth. Frets are Dunlop 6105, which is a fret size that I’ve really come to like. The frets are still tall, easy for bends and single notes, but not as wide as jumbos, which can sometimes feel too big on a guitar. The action sits at just over 4/64” on the 12 fret of the low E string, and under 4/64” on the 12th fret on of the high E string. This is a very comfortable guitar and testament to Fano’s quality and consistency.
