What Does Parker Think?
This JM6 is sweet! Not only does it look amazing with its tastefully aged Bull Black finish, but the combo of the Lollar Staple P90 and Imperial Humbucker absolutely rules! I love the vibe of this guitar, and even unplugged it rings like a bell thanks to the TOM and Stoptail bridge. This JM6 is great and covers so much sonic ground, it’s hard to imagine what it would not excel at.
The Lollar Staple P90 is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. It is somewhat of a hidden gem that is recently coming back into popularity, and this guitar is an example of how great it can sound. It’s both clear and punchy while also remaining fat and warm. I love that it has a unique character with a slightly hotter output than a standard P90. I also feel it is a bit more articulate than a normal P90, which makes this guitar a dream to play in the neck position.
Luckily, the Lollar Imperial in the bridge is a great match, and one of my personal favorite humbuckers especially in the bridge. It compliments this guitar nicely and turns this into a proper rock machine! It does sound great clean, and the bit of natural bite it has translates beautifully through an amp. It compresses in just the right way to give you just that little extra bit of sustain to make your notes sing.
But where the Imperial really shines is with a bit of gain, and this is also where this JM6 really comes alive. The midrange character of the guitar when unplugged comes through the pickup and has just the right grind. It really checked all the boxes for me, was never bright or shrill but would definitely cut through the mix.
How Does It Play?
While plenty nimble, the neck feels almost late ‘50s Gibson. You know, the ones that were actually smaller than all the R8/R9 reissues seem to be? We spec’d this one with a straight 12” fretboard radius, also paying homage to the revered Gibson lineage.
The finish is sanded naturally off the back of the neck for a worn-in feel that won’t get sticky, and there is a healthy neck contour to grant you easy access to the upper frets. Speaking of upper frets, the string action measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings, without buzz.
