What Do We Think?

Big, chewy neck pickup. Jangly middle position. Punchy and meaty bridge tones. This guitar doesn’t leave anything on the table and has a little something extra in the recipe!

The hardware of the Bigsby B5 naturally adds a nice sheen to the tone of the Lollar P-90s. Where P-90s can sometimes sound a hair congested, this guitars maintains clarity to every note without losing the midrange heat that makes a P-90 unique. Neck position lead tones have a chirp and liveliness to them, while chords sound warm and expansive.

The bridge pickup is robust rather than nasal. It sounds a bit more polished than many a P-90 bridge. With the tone on the guitar all the way up it is thick and vibrant. Rolling the tone back emphasizes more of the lows and midrange without turning muddy.

The middle position is a bit more jangly, but just as powerful. String-to-string definition is at its utmost here. It is perfect for shimmering chords and big vibrato textures. The bottom end is remarkably tight and present.

How Does It Play?

Fano’s early ‘60s C neck is a nice medium profile with good shoulder and gentle taper from the nut to the heel. The string action on this guitar measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and even lower on the high E, without any buzz. The back of the neck is sanded smooth and helps ensure an immediate bond the first time you pick up the instrument.
