Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
We love the pickups in this guitar, but before we get there let’s talk about first impressions. The guitar is truly dynamic even before plugging in. It has plenty of resonance and acoustic volume to keep you happy picking on the couch, so much so that you’ll find yourself enjoying the guitar’s ability to respond to dynamics in your picking and fretting hands without an amp around.
Getting plugged in, the Alnico Pole P-90 in the neck sounds like an exceptionally rich and harmonically-complex take on a single coil. It blends the warmth of a standard P-90 with the precise punch of the best single coils. Clean tones are thick but detailed. Overdrives are complex and gritty. The middle position has a naturally compressed tone, forward but not squashed. It really brings out the pick attack and, with a bit of palm muting, evokes a more organic version of “Every Breath You Take.”
The bridge wind of the Alnico Pole P-90 has a nice bite with wonderful coloration in the lower midrange. This pickup is especially responsive to the guitar’s volume and tone controls. Roll back the volume in front of a driven amp to uncover additional string definition and sparkle as the front end of the amp relaxes, or roll back the tone to hi-pass some top end and smooth out the midrange for more humbucker-like tones, all with an irrevocable tightness that a humbucker will be hard-pressed to deliver.
There you have it. She sounds as good as she looks folks! And it’s really worth highlighting that both pickups are extremely interactive with the volume and tone controls, not just the bridge pickup. This guitar sounds amazing plugged straight into a dirty amp if you like to go the no-frills route, with a variety of tones and colors at your disposal just by flipping through pickup settings and intuitively tweaking the guitar knobs.
How Does It Play?
This beauty sets up with the string action measuring just a hair over 4/64” at the 12th fret on the low E, and under 4/64” on the high E without buzz. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. The lacquer is sanded off the back of the neck for a smooth tung-oiled finish without any stickiness when things get cooking. This guitar gets high marks all around here at the shop!
