Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
This guitar may look all straight-ahead rock ‘n’ roll with an attitude, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. The Lollar Firebird pickups are some of our favorite tricks in the toolbox. They have the low end power and punch of a full humbucker, the midrange transparency of a single-coil, and a top end that is smooth yet perfectly enunciated. With the tone all the way up, the bridge pickup can sound like the biggest, fattest Telecaster you’ve never played, or it can melt into some serious midrange heat that will get your amp smoking with the tone rolled back and the gain dialed up.
The neck pickup is articulate, with a big and warm bottom end that stays tight with a little headroom in your amp, and plenty of bite in the midrange. It responds like a more well-mannered and polished version of a neck position single coil, and with loads of output. The middle position is spanky and sounds great with a clean amp for anything from fingerpicking to funky strumming, and sounds gorgeous through lush delays and reverbs as well. So there you have it… this is an incredibly well-rounded guitar that won’t leaving you hanging when the next song starts.
How Does It Play?
The early 60’s C neck profile leans on the slim side for comfort, with enough shoulder and girth to comfortably support the hand. The fretwork is impeccable with highly polished frets and smooth fret ends. The neck adjusts right where it needs to be and the string action is low and fast, measuring 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings without any buzz. The neck also feels exceptionally smooth and natural where the finish is worn away under the fretting hand. The guitar is beautifully sculpted on the back to hug the body and has a generous arm contour to keep your picking hand relaxed.
