What Does Josh Think?
This guitar is a story unto itself, from the tasteful aging to the hardware selections and, not least of all, the exotic Black Limba neck and body. Black Limba is the darker sibling to White Limba, also known as Korina. Tonally, they are identical. So if a Korina Gibson puts you in any frame of mind, you know exactly what we’re talking about it.
Compared to mahogany, Limba presents itself as a little tighter and punchier. But it still has the depth and warmth you love in a mahogany guitar. That means the neck position Lollar P-90 captures a fantastic immediacy in your note attack, yet has big-bodied low end to support it.
The bridge position has both bite and shimmer. Played softly, it emphasizes a beautiful top end and a bit of sparkle. But when you dig in, it brings forward the midrange and puts a bark before the bite. A little gain never hurt anyway, and you’ll surely find yourself putting your most Marshall-esque amp through its paces.
The middle position is a real sleeper here. The best way I can describe it is to compare to the way the notes jump off an acoustic guitar. The Limba is very lively, and the hardware of the Bigsby vibrato lends a little extra resonance. Overtones seem to dance off the fretboard even with the lightest of input, and the dynamic range is quite expressive when you do play harder.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile give you something to hold onto, but it is not the exaggerated late ‘50s profile that you tend to find on a lot of reissues. It fits really nicely in the hand. The string action measures 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even a tad lower on the high E, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets a breeze.
