What Does Josh Think?
Residing in the neck position of this Mahogany body beauty, the Lollar Firebird pickup exudes Tele tendencies in the best way. It has the open yet steely tonality of a single coil position but combines it with a touch of the roundness and compression of a humbucker. The output is just a little more stout and the pickup is fully hum-cancelling.
The Lollar mini humbucker in the bridge position ups the ante with a bit more midrange grind. It is still a very nuanced pickup and avoids any sense of congestion. It sounds warm yet articulate, a quality than delivers great clean and dirty tones alike. That said, you’re probably going to have a hard time resisting the urge to turn up the gain and rip on this one to hear the best the mahogany body has to offer.
The middle knob is a volume dedicated to the Lollar Mini Broiler in the middle position. This pickup sounds more robust than the middle position on a Strat, but it does share that neutral… neither scooped nor honky… quality that makes it an absolute sleeper. You can blend the middle pickup with any combination of the outer pickups, or solo it by cutting the volume for the neck/bridge. Blended combinations get you those “in-between” tones but with a bit more meat on the bone.
How Does It Play?
The string action on this beauty measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings. No fretbuzz. The neck profile is a nice late 50’s round C, on the slimmer side than you might think when you think ‘50s Gibson. More like the real thing than many of the reissues.
