What Does Josh Think?
We’re not going to lie, it’s not a light one. But it doesn’t have any trouble getting up and moving. This guitar really sings through a clean amp, and that's how you know it's going to roar through a dirty one. There is plenty of low end but it doesn’t overwhelm. Rather, the energy is balanced across the full EQ spectrum. The midrange is tight, and the top end has glorious sustain.
This PX6 is Korina body and set neck. Korina synonymous with White Limba, We commonly know it as Korina due to Gibson’s coining of the term for Limba in the late ‘50s and beyond. Any way you cut it, it’s a unique wood with tonal properties all its own.
The Lollar Firebird pickup in the neck position is voiced nice and open. Think of it almost like a more robust, hotter output single coil in terms of EQ characteristic. It is fully hum-cancelling but has an extremely expressive dynamic range and never muddies up even with the volume rolled back.
The bridge position is outfitted with a Lollar Mini Humbucker. Think a full size humbucker with a little bit more sting on the attack and less midrange hump. It is here to do the bidding of the Korina neck and body. Whether grinding away with the tone fully up or rolled back a touch for a more PAF-voiced tone, it sounds big and loud.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile has just the right amount of fight in it. It encourages you to grip on tight for the ride, yet also supports the hand in a way that thwarts any fatigue. The strings are superbly easy to wrangle, with the string action hovering just around 4/64” at the 12th fret without buzz, even on your most aggressive string bends.
