What Does Cam Think?
This Fano Alt de Facto PX6 is an absolute rock machine. Mahogany body, set mahogany neck, ebony board, single pickup, hard tail bridge; there is no denying what this thing was born to do. It takes any riff you throw at it, spits it out, and asks for more. But don’t let the spartan control layout fool you. This PX6 features a wide tonal palate with many switching options hiding in plain sight. The aged candy apple orange nitro finish and leopard tortoise pickguard are just icing on the cake. This is one of the more unique Fano’s we’ve spec’d out!
On the surface, this PX6 looks like a one-trick pony with a single pickup, volume, and tone control. Not so! The tone control is actually a 5-way rotary switch with the following switching combinations: position 1 is full size humbucker, position 2 is humbucker split (inner coil), position 3 is both coils in parallel, position 4 is humbucker split (outer coil), and position 5 is both coils in series (out of phase). I must say, a pretty astounding amount of options for a single pickup and 2 knobs!
The pickup itself is a Suhr SSH+, which is a high output Alnico V pickup. The SSH+ is great for classic rock, metal, and anything in between. The lows are tight, the mids are meaty, and the highs are defined with excellent harmonic content. With the 5 way selector, you’ll be able to use this pickup to its absolute tonal limit.
I plugged this PX6 into our 3rd Power Dirty Sink, and I was in tone heaven. The overdrive was rich and full of harmonics. When I wanted to get cleaner, I had several shades available in positions 2-4. And when I wanted to get funky, position 5 brought the funk with its out of phase wiring. All this tonal goodness came from one pickup and one amp channel. Who said simplicity is limiting?
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s Roundback C is a thick and full neck shape that doesn’t wear out its welcome. My hand felt supported while playing and I especially liked how the shape filled out even more up the neck. The string action measures just 4/64” at the 12th fret across all strings. There is no fret buzz to speak of!
