What Does Josh Think?
This guitar is a mahogany tone beast! All-mahogany build with set neck and rosewood fretboard. Classic recipe, and it delivers! The bottom end rings big and full while the midrange sings transparently.
The Lollar Mini Humbuckers are just the tool to harness both the warmth and the airiness of the mahogany. The neck position is fat but defined. It sounds nice and juicy on clean tones and dirt tones alike. It has a bouncy feel, as if its giving back more than you put in. It has less compression than a full size humbucker, so the dynamic ceiling seems to sit higher and the guitar responds to every nuance of the player’s input.
The bridge position has bark. It’s more focused, reducing the drag on the low end and stiffening up the suspension a little, so to speak. You can get really great tones for clean double stops and country picking, but you’re probably going to want to crank up the gain to work it to its full potential. It is tight and meaty and extends smoothly in the upper register.
The mini humbuckers respond exceptionally well to the tone knob. The guitar sounds great at 10 and you may never venture from there. But if you do, you’ll find that the midrange stays clearer than a typical humbucker as you roll it back. So you have really usable tones anywhere from 4 to 10 on the knob. Dialing back just a couple digits drops you into typical humbucker territory, but you can dial back even further for lyrical lead lines or jazz chords that will give you the warm fuzzies.
Beyond the pickups, the guitar is endowed with a Bigsby B5 and tune-o-matic bridge. I am pleased to report it stays in tune beautifully. If you take a quick look, you’ll notice that Fano maintains straight string pulls through the nut to the tuning pegs. That makes a big difference compared to *ahem* some other brands.
The copper metallic finish has stunning finish checking accompanied by very light distressing. You’re going to take this bad boy and put your own wear on it. The block inlays are gorgeous too, and you gotta love that little bit of natural mahogany peeking out on the lower headstock step for contrast with the copper.
How Does It Play?
The string action straddles 4/64” at the 12th fret without buzz. The frets are nicely dressed and polished. The neck is a moderate late 50’s profile, round but not excessive. It gives you support without slowing you down.
