Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Does Ivey Think?
This is not your average non-reverse! This Fano PX6 in a particularly stunning Lake Placid Blue finish is also decked out with a rich tortoise shell pickguard and a set of Fano’s very own nickel-covered humbuckers.
This might be our first time hearing these pickups in a PX6 and I’m a fan! The Fano humbuckers are a great sounding set that compliment this guitar well. The bridge has a cutting upper midrange with a nice bite when overdriven, and a supportive low end that adds just the right amount of body without getting flubby. When plugged into a Marshall JTM style amp with a little bit of overdrive in front it reminded me of the tone on "Photograph" by Def Leopard.
Moving to the neck, there's some nice compression here that feels natural and adds the right amount of squish when digging into some bluesy lead lines. This position is full but not overpowering, with the amount of high end to help it poke through. Mixing the neck and bridge pickups offers a very full-spectrum clean tone with sparkling highs, round lows and a slightly scooped out midrange.
How Does It Play?
The PX6 neck profile is a nice 50’s round C that starts out at a very moderate depth and fills out the hand more as you arrive at the upper frets. But it never gets cumbersome. More ’59 than ’57, if you catch our drift. The fretwork on the guitar is impeccable. The string action measures 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th without buzz, and even lower on the high E.
