What Does Josh Think?

The Suhr Thornbucker in the neck position provides chewy, delicious midrange with just the right touch of spank. It allows you to hear each note in a chord with modest separation and unspoiled warmth. It compresses sweetly but maintains the composure of your pick attack nicely. The ebony fretboard really opens the neck position on a humbucker guitar.

The Thornbucker Plus in the bridge is a bit more hot-rodded, just screaming out for its moment in the spotlight. Rhythm work is meaty and grinding but the Alnico IV magnets keep some nice sheen on the top to prevent the pickup from ever getting muddy. Lead lines will absolutely roar, getting plenty of support from the mahogany body.

How Does It Play?

The late ‘50s Roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The string action measures just 4/64” across all strings at the 12th fret. There is no fretbuzz anywhere on the neck, so feel free to explore. The contoured neck heel gives excellent access to the upper frets as well.
