Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?
The SP6 is an iconic design that Fano has really made their own. This one features a Fano branded T-style bridge pickup and their P-90 in the neck. It has a proprietary bridge devoid of the cumbersome ashtray sides and swaps out the individual string ferrules of a standard T-style for a more substantial steel block mounted in the back of the body.
The bridge position dishes out those iconic, snappy tele tones you'd expect with a unique low-end punch that the shorter scale length adds into the mix. It rounds it out very nicely without losing any of the traditional vibe. This pickup works well with overdrives that add a little more midrange without having any unpleasant frequencies or nasally build-up. It has an open character and just the right amount of output to bridge the gap between vintage and hot.
Moving to the neck pickup, you'll find some buttery low mids that pleasantly accompany bluesy lead lines and first-position riffs. There's a natural compression that feels great when you dig in, having both a throaty SRV-inspired attack and just enough top-end snap to help things cut. It mixes very well with the bridge pickup, delivering a middle position that has plenty of chime and balanced lows.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s roundback neck profile is full but accessible. Compare it to Gibson’s more recent take on a ’59 reissue. The string action measures barely over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and just under 4/64” on the high E, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes the transition to the upper frets a breeze.
