Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. What Do We Think?

Put a Tele on steroids and add some offset-body swagger. Drive home those spanky P-90 clean tones with a maple fretboard, and drop in a Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stopbar tailpiece for Les Paul-like sustain on your lead tones. The alder body is warm and resonant, providing the perfect platform for the Lollar 5% underwound P-90 in the neck to shine. It is fat but articulate, cleaning up the lower midrange that can be a bit overwhelming with a standard P-90 in the neck. And it pairs perfectly with the traditional P-90 wind in the bridge.

The middle position is hum-cancelling if you find yourself in a situation with noisy power or lots of interference, and has a beautiful sheen that will make you want to come back for more regardless. The bridge position takes you into the territory of a well-rounded early 60’s Tele pickup with a bit of extra warmth, delivering rich midrange and a refined top end that could best be described as articulate rather than strident. The guitar has plenty of output to saturate your tube amp when desired and the volume knob provides excellent control when you want to clean up your more overdriven tones right from the guitar.

How Does It Play?

These guitars come in playing great right from Fano. The frets are beautifully dressed and polished. The early 60’s-inspired C profile is temperately slim, but with a nice amount of shoulder to support the hand and thwart fatigue. We do a thorough check and make the occasional truss rod, nut or saddle tweak to make sure the guitar plays exactly to our liking. The string action measures just 4/64” across all strings at the 12th fret, without any buzz. The contoured neck heel makes those upper-fret transitions smooth and effortless, and the worn neck finish delivers an immediately broken-in feel that is tongue-oiled to be smooth and fast without any stick as your hands get moving.
