Like what you see? All photos are of the exact instrument you will receive.

Each Fano Oltre series guitar is handbuilt in the USA using an old-growth North American Alder body, maple neck and a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The result is a resonant, lively instrument crafted with care and precision. This series allows for a number of customizations, from color to pickguard, knobs to pickups. Models can be built with either a maple or rosewood fretboard to meet the needs of a variety of players. If this isn’t the exact Fano you are looking for, contact us to spec one out precisely to your liking!

What Do We Think?

The Lollar El Rayos in this guitar provide the articulation of a single coil with the roundness of a humbucker. Clean tones are open through the midrange and chimey on top, with plenty of body beneath that stays tight and defined. The pickups handle gain in much the usual creamy fashion of other humbuckers, but with more nuance in the midrange. They have a rich but moderate output that doesn’t hit the front end of your pedals too hard, leaving them the headroom to work their magic with clarity.

This guitar also has coil splits up its sleeve! Being a low resistance pickup, the coil splits have a notable volume drop when used alone. But used in conjunction with the opposite pickup left in full humbucking mode, the tones are fantastic. Splitting the bridge and leaving the neck humbucking gives you tones reminiscent of the middle position on a Telecaster, sugary sweet and with a nice pop at the same time. Splitting the neck while leaving the bridge humbucking has a nice compression and subtle out-of-phase honk.

We find the tone control to be especially friendly with the El Rayos. The sweep is wide and even. Dialing back while in the bridge position will bring you to Malcom Young-inspired chime and grind, classic dirty ZZ Top rhythm tones, and even the filtered/cocked-wah sounds of Brad Paisley’s “Ticks” all way the back at around 2. The tone knob regulates the crystalline clarity of the middle position when you want to mellow the pick attack. And the neck pickup can bear exceptional warmth while still maintaining a sweet string-to-string definition.

How Does It Play?

The early 60’s C neck profile is moderately slim, with a nice bit of shoulder to comfortably support the hand. The fretwork is impeccable and highly polished so that your string bends feel smooth as butter. The neck adjusts right where it needs to be and the string action is low and fast. Specifically, the string action measures just 4/64” on the low E at the 12th and nearly down to 3/64” on the high E without any buzz
