This guitar arrived with some blemish spots in the finish on the back of the body in the horn area, where the satin top coat finished curing a little funny during transit. We put our heads together with Doug Kauer and mutually decided that the best course of action was to B-stock this one and pass the savings on to the customer, rather than send it back and have the whole guitar stripped and refinished.

We sanded and hand-buffed the back of the treble side body wing to remove the blemishes. Visually, it now looks as it would have straight from the shop. You may be able to discern a slight texture difference where the satin finish is naturally smoother on this wing now, but it is quite subtle. We have discounted the guitar 10% just for that, and we have snapped some close-up photos.

The Banshee Express gives you the specs of the Deluxe but with a satin finish and a lower price tag. After we placed this order, Doug decided to phase out the Express model but wanted to honor the price tag of our original order. Rather than go with the open-pore finish that the Express would typically have on the back of the body and neck, Doug went ahead and did this one fully grain-filled for us to give it the smooth feel and look of the rest of the Banshee lineup. Hence, this guitar is 100% a satin finish Deluxe… and the very last to bear the Banshee Express moniker.

What Do We Think?

This guitar delivers a big, sweeping, open palette. The TV Jones PowerTron (neck) and PowerTron Plus (bridge) have a natural notch in the midrange that gives cleans a defined sparkle and pairs oh-so-nicely with a Tube Screamer style pedal for overdrive heaven. The bottom end of the guitar is naturally warm and robust. In fact, we encourage you to take the time to strum it before plugging in and hear just how resonant this guitar is acoustically. Pair that with the rich upper harmonics of the TV Jones pickup set and you have a winning combination.

How Does It Play?

This guitar sets up beautifully a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and under 4/64” on the high E string, all without buzz. The neck feels amazing in the hand with a moderate ‘50s-inspired C profile and that silky satin finish. The frets are PLEK’d and polished to perfection.
