What Does Josh Think?

This may be the guitar that has spoken to me more than any other recently. I’m a big fan of the Lollar Staple P-90, and it is really magical in this guitar. It has the depth and body of a humbucker, but with a little more clarity and pick attack. We often describe the pickup as a woodier sounding version of a standard P-90, and that holds true here as well. It just sounds really large and articulate. Think Derek Trucks when you throw a bit of dirt at it.

The Lollar Imperial sounds extra sweet in this guitar with the chime of the Bigsby hardware thrown into the recipe. The sound is reminiscent of the lively, resonant character you associate with a single-pickup guitar devoid of the excessive string pull from the neck pickup. Don’t be afraid to hear the bridge position clean before you turn up the gain. But it can also rock with the best of them. The coil split (just pull up on the volume knob) plays very nicely as well, sounding a bit Strat-ish but not quite as bright or brash.

The middle positions have a lot offer too. With the Imperial in humbucking mode, the middle bears semblance to the middle position on a Les Paul but with a bit more of the woody, organic character of the Staple P-90 coming through. And with the Imperial split for that single-coil contribution again, it goes to in-between position Strat vibes with a more controlled quack. Rather surprising given the appearance of the instrument, but a welcome surprise nonetheless!

How Does It Play?

The neck feels fantastic. The profile is a comfortable medium-chunky C with a nice taper that allows you to dig in anywhere but really supports the hand no matter how you play. The guitar sets up beautifully with just the right touch of relief and excellent string action up and down the fretboard. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret, a little lower even on the high strings. This guitar plays beautifully without any buzz.
