The Lion STP is a single treble pickup take on the Lion that retains plenty of ability to do some heavy lifting, while ensuring maximum string resonance for that undeniable “Jr” sound. It can be ordered in either a 24.75” or 25.5” long scale. It comes with a nice tummy cut, 3-on-3 “snakehead” tuner/headstock configuration, and choice of body wood.

What Does Josh Think?

This is a special one. There’s no doubt that removing the magnetic pull of the neck pickup from the equation gives you a bigger, broader tonal footprint at the bridge pickup. The Lollar Dogear P-90 is bold but not brash. It sounds warmer and fuller in this guitar than you might be accustomed to from a bridge position P-90, but retains all the great bite and clarity on top too.

The tone knob is wonderfully usable. It sounds incredible set full on 10, with brilliant harmonics that jump through the amp and a buoyant low end beneath. But it sounds equally good as you roll it back. A smoother top end and woodier midrange are immediately at your fingertips as you roll back to the 7-8 range.

With gain, I find the tone knob has an even larger sweep to play with. A small roll backward gives more buttery highs and thicker mids to your overdrives. Getting down in the 5-7 range brings out a superbly vocal, slightly nasal tone that really sings during solos and dials back the bite in your rhythm parts a bit. In the 3-5 range, you’ve got that wonderfully muted-yet-enunciated honk of a wah pedal cocked back mid sweep.

Another highlight of this guitar is the Graph Tech ResoMax wraparound bridge which features six individual saddles to give you full control over intonation. It’s made of a strong but lightweight aluminum alloy, giving you the resonance and immediate response of a classic wraparound with perhaps a little more beef to it. It also features a magnetic lock to the studs so you don’t have to worry about it falling off during quick string changes if you slack all strings at once.

We are really happy to see Avi Shabat utilize the spoke wheel truss rod adjustment on his builds (think EVH or Ernie Ball) so that you never have to remove the neck to make adjustments. You’ll appreciate the generously rounded body edges, as well as the rolled edges of the one-piece quartersawn hard maple neck. Avi’s fret dressing is some of the best in the business as well.

How Does It Play?

The neck is a good medium C, starting at 0.85” at the 1st fret and building to 0.94” at the 12th. The back of the neck is sanded down perfectly smooth. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th fret without a hint of buzz.
