What Do We Think?

Built around a lightweight roasted pine body and roasted maple neck, this guitar dishes out tones that are big, bold and percussive. The bottom end is warm but controlled. We find the low end “body” of the guitar to sit more in the lush frequencies of your lower midrange rather than muddying up your low E string.

The Lollar Regals are dynamic pickups, very responsive to changes in pick attack and volume on the guitar. Measuring in at over 10k resistance, they have plenty of ability to push an amp if desired. But unlike a traditional “hot” pickup, they are actually voiced very open and balanced. The neck position balances a sweet low end with a neutral midrange and a beautiful chirp in the highs.

The middle position scoops the upper mids a bit, almost to Strat-like affect. And then the bridge pickup. Even against a clean amp, this pickup is sweet and open. It has a nice “cluck” over a strong bottom end, reminiscent of iconic tele tones but with some added harmonic richness. Add some dirt and this pickup really sings.

How Does It Play?

The Roasted Maple neck on this one is a medium C with healthy shoulders. Plek’d to perfection as with all of Doug Kauer’s necks. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and only a hair over 3/64” on the high E, all without a hint of fretbuzz.
