Mario Martin guitars are hand built in Murfreesboro, TN just 40 minutes down the road from us! Undertaking the entire build process from cutting the body blank to spraying the final touch of nitro, Mario Martin achieves a level of guitar making well beyond partscaster builders who may look alike on the surface. These guys maintain one of the best collections of tonewoods around, and every neck/body/pickup combination is chosen carefully to amplify the personality of the guitar as a whole. Whether you crave an S-style guitar straight out of 1958 or the unique Tele-Strat mashup that is the Honcho, we are confident you’ll find what you’re looking for in a Mario Martin.
What Does Cam Think?
This Mario Martin T-Style is an exceptional instrument, which should be no shock coming from Mario. He makes such great pieces that truly seem vintage in feel and tone. This example has a featherweight super resonant pine body and roasted flame maple neck, plus a stunning Deep Lake Placid Blue paint job under nitro. The color reminds me of a vintage Pelham Blue. Other features include Dunlop 6105 frets, the 'Chunky C' neck shape, and a 9.5”-12” compound radius.
The pickups are a killer set from Lollar, namely a P-90 in the neck and a J Street in the bridge. They complement each-other very nicely in both volume and tone. The J Street gives you THE quintessential T-style bridge pickup tone. As soon as I plugged it in and hit the first chord, I knew it. That classic pop and twang is all there in force. You can feel the oomph of your chords coming through the speaker. I’m not a country player, but that tone still put a smile on my face. The J Street is slightly hotter than some of the other Lollar T style pickups, but pleasingly so.
Complementing the J Street, the Lollar P-90 is the Yin to the J Street’s Yang. It’s smooth, mellow, and full. A great option for chords or jazzy melody lines. We have the P-90 backed off from the strings a good bit to really accentuate the mellow tonality. The middle position is a combination of the two. It’s like the neck position P-90 fullness with the attack and clarity of the J Street. There isn’t a bad sound in any position.
How Does It Play?
This one sets up at just over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and 3/64” on the high E string at the 12th fret. The Chunky C neck profile is very comfortable, measuring around .860” at the 1st fret and .930” at the 12th with nice shoulders. Just to compare, Mario has a Chunky C+ and a C++ which are both larger than the Chunky C, and none of which are what you would consider baseball-bat-thick.
