What Does Josh Think?
This is a fantastically nimble guitar. It weighs under 7.5lb and it resonates with punchy low end and a strong, but airy midrange. The range for nuance and dynamics is impressively wide.
Just like the last JM6 we spec’d with a wraparound bridge, the guitar has a nice snap in comparison to its Tune-o-Matic counterparts and quite possibly some increased sustain as well. Notes ring out with a piano-like quality, and the old-growth alder body provides great grounds for some substantial acoustic resonance.
The uncovered Lollar Imperial humbuckers are a match made in heaven for the wraptail, with a little extra spank and clarity through the midrange and top end. Don’t worry, the neck position has plenty of grunt. But pair that with an articulate upper half and you finally have a neck position you can use for just about anything, single notes and big chords alike.
The bridge position has the perfect “bite,” and it responds well to the tone knob. From full-on cut with tone on 10, to a more mellowed-out and vocal quality with tone rolled back, it has loads of flexibility and not a dull sound across the gamut. The middle position is an amazing balance of beefy and pristine. It also “cleans up” especially well, as the midrange is naturally a bit scooped due to the interaction of the pickups. Perhaps here most of all, the piano-like clarity mentioned above comes across the strongest.
How Does It Play?
The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret, and even lower on the high E. There is no fret buzz. The early 60’s-inspired neck splits the difference between a ‘50s round C and ‘60s D. The finish is sanded naturally off the back of the neck to prevent any nitro stickiness as your hands get moving.
