What Does Josh Think?
This mahogany neck and body PX6 hits exactly where you expect it to with powerful low end and a rich midrange ready to saturate a good tube amp. The set neck design on this particular build really makes the neck and body move as one unit, maximizing sustain. You feel the vibrations as much in your left hand as you do in the tummy.
The Lollar Imperial in the neck position is warm and chewy, but with a nice airiness on the upper strings that begs for some single note leads. Likewise, the bridge position begs for more lead work even as it delivers the voice-like vowels that mahogany accommodates so well. But it is also right at home ripping classic rock riffs and even the most basic of rhythm parts. It can snarl, but is never stuffy. The EQ range is broad and open.
The middle position has surprises in store, dishing out snap and immediacy that you would normally find associate with single coils. Of course, it does this while being completely hum-cancelling. But the interplay of the two pickups really opens up the midrange and gives big, beautiful articulation to your chord work.
The finish is a gorgeously aged Pelham Blue, showing hints of green just like a vintage one. There is some fantastic finish checking that was difficult to capture on camera but calls for a double take when you see it in person. Aged cream neck binding and trapezoid inlays complete the look.
How Does It Play?
The late ‘50s Roundback C starts off feeling much like a medium C at the first few frets, and really starts to fill out around the 7th fret. It gives you something really wonderful to hold onto for those blues boxes at the 9th fret, 12th fret etc. The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12th fret and even lower on the high E.
