What Does Josh Think?

Xotic has been knocking their T-styles way out of the park and this one might be my favorite yet. It is exceptionally vibrant. Big and lively and superbly articulate. I would never classify it as bright or brash, though you can certainly dig in deep by the bridge for that quintessential ‘50s tele twang.

The neck pickup is lush and throaty, but the midrange never gets out of hand. There is a sweet transparency with a lighter attack, while a heavier hand brings forward a chunkier underpinning. For both chord work and single note leads, the tone is round and clear.

The bridge position knows how to growl even through a clean amp. The bottom is big and full and the output is slightly north of vintage. But this pickup still has those perfect bell-like tones up top. The Xotic bridge is a really nicely-machined piece of hardware. The steel-plated brass saddles give some real balls to the tone but still taper off the top end end very pleasingly.

The bridge pickup maintains perfect composure even with pretty aggressive overdrives. If you roll the tone back a touch, it even covers humbucker territory very nicely. The Xotic RV-TE pickup set is pretty low noise for single coils! And of course, the middle position offers noise-free spank that works wonders for funk or for effect-laden playing. Ask me how I know. Ha.

How Does It Play?

The string action measures just 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th and even a touch under on the high E. The neck is a healthy medium C, giving it a vintage-leaning feel. It tapers only very moderately from nut to heel to ensure it never gets out of hand.

The Jescar nickel silver fretwire polishes up really nicely. It is the equivalent of a Dunlop 6105 in profile but feels a bit smoother under the string. Xotic dresses the fret ends to perfection, too, so nothing to snag on as your hand glides up and down the fretboard.
