Inspired by San Diego's blend of surf, skate, auto and music cultures, the A-Type re-imagines electric guitar design into a sound and feel all its own. The trussed, slim hollow body is remarkably lightweight and uniquely voiced to combine resonance, sustain and feedback suppression. An asymmetrical fretboard radius makes playing and bending strings effortless and produces a more consistent tonal character.
A new single-coil pickup design blends warmth and fidelity (FF42) with a brighter and punchier pickup (PF42) option also available. The proprietary CamTail trem/vibrato system keeps strings in tune with each other on dives and bends. A hardtail option is available as well. Every design feature works to reveal a playing experience unlike any other — one that frees you up to sound more like you
What Does Cam Think?
This A-Type in Sweet Tea Orange is an absolute knock-out. The flame top pattern is super unique with tons of character. The natural binding is beautifully done. I can’t get over how well made these Powers are! The attention to detail is just incredible. This A-Type also features the CamTail Tremolo system. It’s essentially a modified Bigsby in design and feel, with some serious quality of life upgrades. Andy Powers, of Powers Electric, figured out the travel of each string when using the bar. He designed separate string guides of varying diameter to retain string-to-string intonation. You can play a chord, use the bar, and the chord remains in-tune with itself. The trem is also silky smooth and stays in tune very well with use.
The guitar features an ash body, solid maple top, mahogany neck, and rosewood board. Its construction is more acoustic than electric, featuring a true hollow body design. It’s braced like an acoustic and features two sound posts, allowing the top and back to move simultaneously. This maximizes the guitar’s natural resonance and helps to suppress feedback. It’s a unique guitar design that’s also quite loud acoustically; I haven’t played anything quite like it.
This A-Type features the ‘Half Faraday’ pickups. They differ from the ‘Full Faraday’ pickups in both appearance and tonality. Instead of the enclosed metal case, the Half Farady pickups use a partially enclosed case. This alters the tone a bit, but in a cool way. The neck position is full with a nice clarity to the top end. As compared to the non-trem Powers with the same pickups, it is a bit brighter. I think this is due to the trem imparting a bit of its own sound.
The bridge position sounds like a slightly rounder Tele bridge pickup. It’s not quite as bright but still has some of that Tele bite and bark, especially in the lower strings. It’s a great bridge position tone! The middle position is scooped and very open, with a hint of additional brightness. Really great for some funky chording or articulate single note lines.
The tone control is also a unique feature on the A-Type. Instead of it rolling off high-end, if basically shifts the midrange focus, leaving you with usable tones across the entire sweep of the knob. With so many player-friendly upgrades and elements, you can tell a guitar player has designed this instrument!
How Does It Play?
The string action measures right at 4/64” on the low E string measured at the 12th fret, and just under 4/64” on the high E string. The neck is a nicely supportive C. You have plenty to hold on to, but there isn’t excess mass that would hinder comfort. The frets are jumbo, but don’t feel excessive. Fretting is easy and you can really get around quick when you need to. The neck is also very nicely rolled and just so comfortable. The finish is a velvet-like matte, so no sticky neck-feel with this one!
