What Do We Think?

The Serus J is one of the hottest boutique guitar models out there, and absolutely the most recognizable Novo model. It’s popular for a reason, with gorgeous lines and drop dead sonics. This example is finished in an incredible copper sparkle. It looks dynamite over the pine body, and boy, is this thing resonant! We ordered this one in the extra light distress level, and I’m glad we did. It’s a knockout!  

This Novo Serus J features a Tempered Pine body, Ebony fretboard and a tempered maple neck. Acoustically, the body resonates with perfect focus and energy. It is loaded with a set of Fralin P-90's, a Mastery bridge and Novo-engraved Mastery vibrato. This all adds up to be the perfect recipe to deliver tones that are charmingly big and clear, yet ready to snarl when called on.

The bridge position is thick with a nice midrange bark. It sound great through a variety of different amps and overdrive settings. The Fralin P-90s are warm in nature, yet have great articulation and clarity. This bridge pickup sits really nicely in a mix, with just enough bump in those upper mids to cut when you need it to.

The neck P-90 is all warmth and soulfulness, and benefits from the beautifully-percussive qualities of the Mastery tremolo. It tracks quickly with your pick attack, never dull or muddy. Yet it has a deep, woody character at the same time. Combining the two pickups in the middle position gives you a pristine, sparkly sheen.

The process Novo uses to cure their woods draws out a character typically found only in vintage guitars with decades of natural aging. The traditional methods of baking can result in a guitar sounding and feeling a little stiff. But Novo’s tempering process brings out a resonance than makes the guitar feel perfectly broken in. We thoroughly enjoy the results.

How Does It Play?

Novo’s Chunky C neck profile is meaty but comfortable, with the finish sanded down on the back of the neck for a silky smooth feel. Novo’s fretwork is superb. The guitar sets up right where we like it, with string action measuring barely a hair over 4/64” on the low E string at the 12^th fret and right at 4/64” on the high E string. The guitar is completely free of fret buzz.
