What Does Cam Think?
This Idris Custom HSS in Lake Como blue is speaking my language. We have this beast optioned out to the nines with playability in mind, featuring jumbo frets, a medium C neck profile, and a compound radius. There is no excuse not to shred on this blue beauty. Let’s talk tone next!
The bridge pickup is a Fralin Modern PAF, which is a big, throaty sounding humbucker. Clean, it has the body to maintain girth yet still retain presence and clarity. It also doesn’t have that cocked-wah midrange that plagues some humbuckers, especially clean. With some gain, it lives up to its namesake, creating harmonically rich overdrive. It feels nice to play, reacting to your right hand.
The Fralin Vintage Hot Strat singles are a nice contrast to the bridge humbucker. They are much lower in output and have excellent clarity and bite with a tight low end. They excel at funky chords, or if you are looking for a vintage output single that never sounds muddy. For cleans, they are crystal clear. With some gain, they beef up but maintain their present high end. And in positions 2 and 4, you can quack if you want to.
This Idris has quite a bit going on under the hood, despite the spartan control layout. The first tone knob also acts as a series/ parallel push/pull switch for the bridge humbucker. This lets you get a single coil tonality, but with more output than a typical single. The second tone knob acts as a blend, adding in either the neck pickup if you are in the bridge position, or the bridge pickup if you are in the neck position. It’s cornucopia of tone!
How Does It Play?
The string height sits right at 4/64” across all strings, measured at the 12th fret. The medium C neck is perfect for chording and shredding alike. Maple fretboards are my absolute favorite, giving you that extra bit of attack, and looking good while doing so. The frets are Jescar 57110, which is in the jumbo camp, allowing for effortless playability and easy bends. The Mann Made bridge is one of the best trems. It’s extremely stable and has the mass to keep notes sustaining.
