What Does Cam Think?
Of the ESP USA’s we have in stock, this Horizon II is the most striking. It’s finished in a stunning black sparkle that has tremendous depth. Pictures don’t quite do this finish justice. The sparkle finish is offset by gold hardware that perfectly blends with the bling. It’s also a riff machine, sporting a mahogany body and maple neck with ESP’s rock-solid set-thru construction. You feel every note you play resonate through the entire guitar.
This Horizon II is equipped with a set of EMG 81X and 85X Active pickups. These differ from the standard 81/ 85 set by way of increased headroom across the board. This gives both pickups a more open and organic tone, with the clarity and consistency that you expect from active EMG’s.
The 81X in the bridge is a very forgiving pickup. It’s kind of like a tone ‘cheat code’ that makes your riffs feel extra fluid and natural under your fingers. The 81X just has this clarity and fluidity that pushes your amp into harmonics quickly and feels so good. There is a tangible reaction from your amp to this pickup that I don’t quite get from a passive.
The neck pickup has the uncanny ability to be fat and full but also clear, all at the same time. You can hear every note of complex chords, even under heavy gain. It’s remarkable honestly. I tend to favor passive pickups with 6- string guitars, but this set has really got me rethinking my pickup position! This a great set for those who are passive players, but want to dabble in the world of actives!
How Does It Play?
The string action sits at just 4/64” across all strings, measured on the 12th fret, with room to go if you want to go even lower. The ebony fretboard is almost jet black and provides an unmatched playing surface for the many notes you will play. The Jescar XJ stainless frets are buttery smooth and never get in the way. The Extra Thin U neck profile is perfect for shredding, without the expense of comfortable chording. The offset inlays are gorgeous, and just the icing on the cake of this strapping shredder.
