Every guitarist needs one single-coil guitar that delivers the perfect amount of bite and twang to cut through the mix—enter the Shabat Lion Standard. With an array of T-style pickups from Lollar to choose from and a feather-light body (ash, alder or pine) fitted with either a Gotoh three-saddle or modern six-saddle bridge, the Lion Standard offers incredible punch, sustain and resonance.
What Does Josh Think?
This is a guitar that fully commits to its vintage appearance. From a lightweight piece of 1-piece swamp ash, to the 1-piece neck, to the choice of Lollar Vintage T pickup set, everything is chosen for one purpose. Acoustically, this guitar resonates loud and proud.
And that’s the perfect sounding board for this pickup set, which leans nicely into the fundamental of the note. It’s pure, in itself not overly loud and not overly bright. The neck pickup sounds like a Strat with a touch of tone roll-off, chewy but open. It sounds great clean and yet it begs for that edge-of-breakup sting a good tube amp delivers.
The bridge pickup has a tight, twangy bottom with that extra oomph of the swamp ash. The midrange is very uncluttered, even as you roll back the tone knob. So whether you want a snappy, scoopy sound or you want to tailor the top end and perhaps crank the gain, you’ll find the tools you need readily under your fingertips.
A few player-friendly nuances I like to point out on Shabats… The body edges are rounded a touch more than production line T-style and feel really nice on the picking arm. The three-way selector switch is situated at a slight angle to make throwing back to the bridge position all that much easier. And as always, Avi’s frets have perfectly rounded ends that never catch as you coast up and down the neck.
How Does It Play?
The neck is a beautiful round C measuring about 0.88” at the first fret and 0.98” at the 12th. It has the classic Fender 1.65” nut width. Very comfortable and befitting of the build. The string action hovers right around 4/64” at the 12th across all strings, giving the you room to dig into your string bends yet the ease to play fast and clean as well.
