This Phoenix Fury features the ‘80s High Plate Skyliner circuit, dishing out meaner and beefier vs the standard circuit. Specifically, the low midrange has a bit more grunt. But this amp still cleans up nice too! And just like the standard voicing, it works equally well with humbuckers as single coils and vice versa.
What Does Josh Think?
Whether you want a “loud amp” feel with a big power section or a more gentle ride reminiscent of a broken-in combo, the Phoenix Fury delivers. It dishes out everything from crystal cleans to raging overdrives, and covers all the beautiful nuances in between.
The ratio knobs on the back panel ensure a harmonious balance in volume between your clean and overdrive channels. But they also have a more secretive function. They serve as the gateway that determines how hard you hit the power section. Running the ratio knobs higher results in a more ODS-styled feel with an immediate response. Running them back a bit gives you more of a vintage sag.
Personally, I start somewhere in the middle with the clean ratio knob around 1 o’clock and the overdrive ratio between 9 and 11 o’clock, mixed to balance the dirt channel to the clean. The front side of the amp is incredibly easy to dial in. There’s not a bad tone to be had. Start with input volume, EQ’s and Level at noon and you’re off to the races. Better yet, flip the EQ switches up for a tailor-made “tightening up” of the amp with just the right frequencies highlighted.
As we hinted at the top, this amp takes really well to all pickup types. No tone tweaking needed. The amp has a footswitchable boost that nets you a nice bump when you need a little extra... you’ll push the clean channel more quickly into beautiful breakup and the boost the overdrive channel to soaring heights.
The second button on the footswitch is your channel switching. The overdrive channel is particularly rich and creamy between 9 and noon. But it can go quite aggressive when you need it to, so don’t be afraid to experiment with the full sweep of the gain. It also cleans up really nicely with the guitar’s volume. Superbly dynamic and 3-dimensional.
The FET input introduces a transistor gain stage before the rest of the circuitry, resulting in a seductive sizzle on a Les Paul and a glassy punch on a Strat. Again, the guitar’s volume knob has extraordinary control over the amp. You can hold back the tide or let it roar full tilt with just a quick turn of the hand.
The reverb is lush and incredibly versatile. I tend to favor the reverb controls (both the Send and Return) between 9 and 10 o’clock for “everyday” playing. However, turning up the Send will deliver the big surfy spring reverb of a Fender combo, while turning up the Return provides a more studio-inspired reverb. Bringing up both controls gives you some truly huge washes and ambient textures.
