What Does Josh Think?
The Skyline Reverb is the more muscular cousin to the Phoenix Fury. Running a pair of EL34 power tubes, it has a distinctly Plexi-inspired voice but doesn’t stop there. It is prepared to take you well into the depths of modded gain tones. All the while, its high plate preamp circuit delivers the liquid sustain of the archetypal ‘80s ODS builds.
The Volume knob of the preamp section is where your tone sculpting begins. Keeping this level below 11 o’clock affords an open midrange with lots of room for pick attack and other player subtleties to shine through. Pushing it to noon and beyond provides more grunt in the preamp stage, with increasingly compressed mids and smoothed-out dynamics. The variety of “feels” available via the position of this single knob alone is quite impressive.
The clean and dirty channels balance particularly well on this amp. A lot of D-style designs present a challenge finding an EQ structure that works across both channels. But with the Skyline Reverb, your EQ section is delightfully set-and-forget. As a matter of fact, that is true of the whole amp. There is not a bad tone to be found. This monster is incredibly easy to dial in.
The footswitchable Preamp Boost (PAB) flattens your EQ and gives you a nice volume bump in the process. Perfect for solo boosts or for fattening up single coils on the fly. The FET input introduces a transistor gain stage before the rest of the circuitry, giving you yet another way to breathe extra fire from this beast.
The Skyline Reverb has Amplified Nation’s most powerful reverb circuit, utilizing independent send and returns. This allows you to favor the more splashy spring sound of a dialed-up send and a dialed-back return, or the more subtle, studio-like effect created by keeping the send low and boosting the return. Suffice it to say, this reverb is lush and versatile.
The ratio knobs on the back panel of the amp allow you to dial in the perfect volume balance between your channels. They also add a way to throttle your volume down a bit before the signal hits the power stage of the amp. The Skyline Reverb has no problem being run quiet, but sounds fantastic at all volumes.
This Skyline Reverb 50W head is decked out in Golden Brown suede with Oxblood Gold Stripe grill. We carry matching cabs as well!
