The Ibanez Genesis Collection reflects the origins of the 540 Power instrument line; utilizing the same design and styling, paired with precise construction and Japanese craftsmanship. This series is a tribute to Ibanez’s past, delivering the same paradigm shifting features and heavy-hitting performance of the original and rare 540PII, updated as the all NEW 540PIII.

The 540PII is a legendary guitar model, coveted by diehards in the Ibanez collector community. From its origin as a favorite of virtuosic guitarist Alex Skolnick, to its untimely discontinuation in the early 90’s when grunge overtook the airwaves, the 540PII remained a rare curiosity… until now. With the introduction of the NEW Ibanez 540PIII in the Genesis Collection, we can all enjoy an instrument that was unavailable for over 30 years.

What Does Cam Think?

I was quite shocked to see the 540PIII introduced. I had missed a couple chances to purchase an original 540PII, so seeing the model re-introduced as the 540PIII has me very excited. And while I was never able to play an original, all the DNA of the original 540PII is intact in the III, from the basswood body and Edge Tremolo to the Wizard neck and jumbo frets.

The Infinity R neck pickup is a blade humbucker that fits in a single-coil size form factor. This size shifts the pickup a little closer to the neck, yielding a warmer neck position tone. Having 24 frets is great, but there will always be a tone sacrifice if you are looking for a traditional neck position pickup location. The Infinity R pickup is a great solution for this. It’s warm yet articulate, perfect for shredding or clean chords alike!

The V8 pickup in the bridge is a classic offering from Ibanez. It has been around since the 90’s and still works as a standard Ibanez bridge pickup to this day. It’s a tone that shines in many styles and amp situations. It’s high output at around 15k but works great in a basswood guitar with a locking trem, giving your tone that extra push.

What else is left to say about the Edge Tremolo that hasn’t already been said? It’s one of the best tremolos ever devised. It has remained in production for almost 40 years and is one of my absolute favorite trems, so I’m pleased to see it back on the 540PIII. You’ll have no trouble staying in tune while dive-bombing to your heart’s content.

How Does It Play?

The Super Wizard neck is the obvious choice for the re-introduction of the 540P. It’s thin, fast, and super smooth. And with 5-piece construction, you won’t have to worry about warpage or twist. The fretwork is what you’d expect from the Japanese Genesis line; precise. And the jumbo size makes shredding and bending a breeze.
