What Does Cam Think?
Have you ever picked up a new guitar, finding yourself forgetting about the guitar, and just playing it like an instrument you’ve owned for years? Well, that’s what happened when I plugged in this incredible Knaggs Chena this morning. I quickly forgot I was demoing the guitar and started working on licks. I can’t say that has happened too many times in my life.
The Chena model may be my favorite Knaggs in their lineup. It’s a mahogany body, spruce top hollowbody instrument with some familiar specs, including a 12” radius and 24.75” scale. It’s light, resonant, and immaculately constructed. There isn’t much else to ask for in a premium instrument.
Knaggs is using Bare Knuckle Mules in the Chena, which are faithful recreations of vintage PAF humbuckers down to the last detail. The neck position is quite full, yet clear with a pleasant top-end. It has the perfect amount of bass that doesn’t get in the way of clarity. Chords have weight and heft with an extra bit of bloom thanks to the hollowbody design. With some overdrive, lead lines are liquid and smooth.
The bridge position Mule has a strong midrange, but not in a congested way. It’s a classic PAF response that’s brimming with overtones. It works beautifully with overdrive or even heavy distortion. I can hear every note in the chord, even complex ones. I’m convinced the spruce top is doing a little work as well, bringing out a subtle brilliance in the top-end. The middle position is wonderfully scooped in that single coil way. I really like it for single notes, especially with a little drive. This Chena is top notch. I’d be satisfied if this were my only instrument.
How Does It Play?
The guitar sets up with string action right at 4/64” across all strings measured at the 12th fret. The neck profile falls into the ’59 category with a round C carve. It’s pleasantly fat, but with comfortable shoulders so you can still get around quickly when you need to. The frets are beautifully leveled and big enough for quick licks and bends.
